ARC was approached by Dorsey Construction Materials to supply our award-winning cavity fire barriers and cavity closers for a high-rise housing development in Dagenham. The site, Merrielands Crescent, is part of the London Riverside Opportunity area – a 3000 hectare area in the Boroughs of Havering, Barking and Dagenham. The London Riverside Opportunity area was launched to develop homes and jobs for the growing population of London, with plans to provide 26,500 homes.
Merrielands Crescent is a four-acre residential development of contemporary apartments. The land was formerly the Ford car manufacturing plant in Dagenham, Essex, which had been left unused for approx 2 years. Merrielands Crescent consists of one building with 5-7 storeys, and another building with 6-10 storeys, providing in total 325 dwellings, 1,514 m2 of commercial space, and 3,260 sq m of amenity space. A range studio, one bed, two bed, and three bedroom apartments will be available.
The project involved a range of non-standard detailing requirements, and it was clear from an early stage that a bespoke solution would be required. ARC engaged with the sub-contractor, Sheriff Construction, to help the client specify the correct products that would be both compliant and buildable.
Through active engagement with both the sub-contractor, and the main contractor, ARC was able to specify products that would meet the project’s fire performance requirements, while crucially being both compliant and buildable. By taking on this collaborative approach at an early stage in the build, ARC could provide guidance before cavity barriers were required on site, ensuring the project ran smoothly and without delay.
ARC provided project support throughout the entirety of the supply chain – both from a specification point of view with design teams within main contractors, to installation advice and follow up checks on site with the sub-contractor. Lorenzo, Sheriff Construction, commented “we received superb support from ARC all the way through, and they were a big help to us on this project”. ARC were able to provide a robust and quality offering for this high-rise residential project.
Lorenzo at Sheriff ConstructionThis was the first project we worked on under the A1 regulation, which was a big challenge for us. The direct support from ARC made the difference for this project. We received great support from Aaron, his knowledge pushed the project in the right direction. The site had no delays around cavity barriers as the proposal was able to be approved by building control in advance of installation.
