Test methods

In order to demonstrate compliance with the requirements of ADB, cavity barriers are subjected to fire resistance testing.

The appropriate test standards for full fill cavity barriers are BS 476 Part 20, or BS EN 1366-4. Either standard is acceptable.

The table below includes other standards which you may find referenced in relation to cavity barriers:

BS476 (Part 20)

BS EN 1366-4   BS EN 13162   BS EN 13501
  • British standard for fire resistance testing
  • Assesses fire integrity and insulation performance
  • Minimum requirement under ADB of building regs
  • European standard for fire resistance testing
  • Assesses fire integrity and insulation performance
  • Acceptable under ADB as well as in the EU
  • European standard for manufacturing of mineral wool products
  • ARC uses mineral wool that is made to this standard. It is not an appropriate standard for assessing cavity barrier performance
  • European standard for assessment of fire load and spread of fire:
    • A1, A2 = non combustible
    • B = limited combustibility
  • Not appropriate measure of cavity barrier performance
